Silly ME!

I watched, entertained in my spot on the floor at home, my flat, about 8 years ago when I was 4. My new born sister, Norma, was helplessly crawling out of the window sill, eagerly waiting to see what would lay beneath, not knowing it would be death. My mother had recently given birth to her, maybe 5 months ago. Currently,. the entire family, except my little sister Diala who wasn’t born yet, were seated famished in the kitchen gobbling a few strips of hot chicken.

Norma, little baby version of course, was started to crawl down slowly bit by bit and i just stood there watching in awe. It was like a movie to me, if she fell i’d still have the same expression. Nothing mattered to me as gradually she slid down, now only her red and swelly feet dangling from the window pane in joy, not a single thought of the painful end that would soon crush her. And still, i stood enjoying the show! How silly of me! Just on the last second, as her body skidded down the window sill, my brave dad caught sudden sight of her when he strode out of the kitchen and, from about 10 metres away, jumped with no care of what would happen to him, and flew over to Norma, grabbing her by the sweaty singlet, which was managing to slip from his firm grip. But now nothing could stop him from saving her, with a “You are SO IN TROUBLE when I get Norma safely on the floor!!” that filled me with surprise, not noticing what i had done and filled me with fear of what pain I’d go through after Norma was happily crawling back on the carpet.

Hopefully grabbing her pushing and struggling body of pure fat and chubbiness, dad bent down, kissed her lovingly and left her seated on the floor smiling and tugging at her shirt. As for me, he still looked a bit disappointed, but left me be with a sharp glance.  But before leaving me, before I’d sigh with utter relief, he ended the situation confidently and wisley with the ear-throbbing thunder scream of flowing letters with soon formed into good words and cascading furiously out of his mouth,” NEVER DO THAT AGAIN YOU HEAR NADINE? YOU JUST SAT THERE AND WATCHED YOUR SISTER WHO COULD HAVE BEEN DEAD IF I HADN’T GRABBED HER!!! LET THIS BE A WARNING! ONE MORE TIME OF THIS NONSENSE GOING ON IN MY HOUSE, YOU’LL SURELY REGRET YOU UNDERSTOOD?” he bellowed, sighting the dripping tears struggling through the maze of a face i had.  When he realised I hadn’t answered, he screeched once more,” UNDERSTOOD?!” shaking me a soar look, impatiently waiting for my sad reply to tumble out.

“Yes Dad,” i muttered without looking up, upset and disappointed of the unmature reactions I’d given him.

“Good,” he paused, lowering his expression to a soft mumble,” now go to your room,” was the last that was heard as i obediently marched out of the location, head still bowed. And that was that but my father still had a point, if he hadn’t been there, my life would be completely different, and Norma would have not been alive. So i still had a feeling that dad was right and i was wrong, that i deserved a short hit for my unwise actions. This was remembered by me for my entire life time, even now as i write this. Readers, don’t blame him, after all, SILLY ME TO HAVE JUST STOOD THERE, eh?

It’s okay, after all I was only 4! But i mean it was silly. It would have been scary watching you die if dad hadn’t come, yes and it was quite weird. It is fine, I like to help others!!
    @ Anand
Not your fault you know, i mean i was SILLY! Sitting there doing nothing, you have a point. I don’t feel bad, I feel awful for have just stood there, wish there was a time machine to change things, but otherwise life would have been totally changed! ;) I know, this is an experience for 4 year olds and the beginning of learning for me. In that age, i didn’t understand what was happening, so I couldn’t be blamed right? :D
